The artist Nancy Young, is graduating this year with a BFA in printmaking. She told us that in 1984 she was disqualified from the university due to her failing classes because bipolar and substance abuse disorders. Now its different because she is involved in her printmaking major by going to different classes Her exhibition title is called, “As The Crow Flies”. She named this because  she was a person going around the city to increase her skills in printmaking. She did say she doesn’t do it for the money, money isn’t a problem for her because she as a stable job in Orange County.

Her exhibition As The Crow Flies was chosen because she traveled to different parts of Southern California for art workshops, shows, and classes to improve her artwork. Her art work has many different types of canvas to a little sheet of metal that was put into acid to have a design. She stated that most of the pieces had birds eye views from her home city. She used really dull colors in her art. From her artwork you can tell she has a lot of patients and is very experienced.

When we were interviewing Nancy, she told us one of the key points in life is you have to be the type to go out and try new experiences. She said  that there will be hard times throughout the lifetime but it will make you a better person but in her words fly higher. Since she is grading from CSULB she is happy and has achieved her goal. She didn’t plan any of her pieces were planned but happened throughout the day. Nancy is very grateful that she was given another opportunity to finish her goal and get her degree in Art.

This week’s artist conversation was different from others only because she allowed us to touch some of her pieces which she passed some around. She showed emotion towards her art, she is really proud of her artwork. Overall throughout the semester we had really good art gallery which was eye opening seeing different artist and how they work. Seeing different types of art and learning how to view art and appreciate it. What a great way to end of the semester with this art gallery!
